CHILDREN’S MATERIALS
ILS
511 Children’s Materials and Services – One of the first assignments in this class
involved an examination of professional review sources for children’s materials.
ILS
511 – also
involved reading a lot of children’s literature, including picture books, fairy
and folktales, easy fiction, intermediate fiction, magazines, biographies, and
award winners. We compared some
classics to books by more contemporary authors. The major projects in this course are referenced in other competency
areas of this portfolio because most of the analysis related to the literature
itself was done in extensive class discussion.
Since this was an online class, the “discussion” was actually
asynchronous and in written form.
Therefore, with a little editing, some can be extracted to be included
in this portfolio. One example is my
contribution to the discussion of children’s periodicals.
Also
in ILS 511 –
we read all the Connecticut State Nutmeg Award nominees for 2002. Our reviews of the books were posted in the
discussion area of the courseware. As a
small sample, I include my review of Dicamilla’s Because of Winn-Dixie, my
favorite of the nominees for that year.
