CATALOGUING ISSUES
ILS-506
Information Analysis and Organization –
In this class I learned the foreign language that is cataloging, culminating in
a final which entailed creating a complete main entry catalog record for a new work fabricated by the instructor, along with rationale for all choices made. A Subject cataloging
had to fit with existing records in the SCSU’s
library.
Also in
ILS-506 – an assignment required me
to analyze and comment on the cataloging practices of the Connecticut universities
represented by the common online catalog CONSULS, as represented by the records in the system
for items for and about Saint Exupery. Taking into account any criticisms, a new shelflist had to
be created for existing items, with eight additional items located and inserted.
A third
assignment in ILS-506 – required the
examination and critique of catalog automation vendors and their products as
represented in the OPACs or IPACs
of multiple libraries.
