About Library
Collection Policy
The mission of the Capstone Portfolio Library is to offer easy-to-use electronic
resources for the support and inspiration of students creating Information and
Library Science portfolios.

The
selection criteria for the Library is to include resources that directly
contribute to the creation of high quality capstone portfolios.  Content was
selected based on its accessibility, accuracy, and appeal.  The criteria included:
consistency, design, flow, individuality, technologies used in portfolio creation,
uniqueness, variety of MLS tracks, and substance.

The Library resources are
organized into the following topics:

Requirements - lists the SCSU general requirements, School Media Specialist
requirements, and submission requirements for the capstone portfolio.

Tools - provides resources for web design, web hosting, and CD-ROM storage.

Content - provides resources for writing portfolio components, working with an
advisor, and creating a resume.

Samples - provides samples of portfolios and resumes from SCSU graduate
students, other Information and Library Science graduate students, and
professional librarians.

Bibliography - provides links to articles, websites, and books concerning electronic
portfolios.

Hundreds of
MLS graduate student portfolios from 2002-2004 were reviewed.
The creators selected
samples which offered compelling content, clean
presentation, and breadth of service.  SCSU portfolios originally published to
CD-ROM have been published by this project to t
his website with author
permission, and where possible, with personal addresses deleted.

The creators of the Library are not responsible for checking sample portfolios or
other resources in the Library for dead links, inaccuracy, copyright infringement,
or violation of intellectual property.  If copyright or intellectual property abuses are
identified, however, those resources will be removed from the site during the
maintenance period.

The Library is hosted by
Yahoo! Web Hosting, and was built using the Yahoo!
SiteBuilder tool set.

The Library will be
maintained until December 27, 2004.  After that time,  the
creators are not responsible for out-of-date content.  This Library was created as
a joint project by Robin C. Stevens and Linda Valley, for the Southern Connecticut
State University class ILS 655, taught by Dr. Yan Quan Liu, Fall 2004.

Metadata
Metadata (data about data) is a fundamental part of the solution to structuring
records and describing resources. Metadata for the World Wide Web is still in its
infancy, and will continue to undergo a process of evolution.

Dublin Core Metadata Element Set (DCMES) can be viewed as the common
semantic building block of metadata for the Word Wide Web (WWW) and digital
libraries (DL). Dublin Core (DC) is the metadata model that is expressible in
MARC, HTML, or XML and it incorporates interoperable standards for web-based
material. The DCMES is intended to support cross-subject search and retrieval.
The Capstone Portfolio Digital Library uses the following metadata elements:
Title - resource name
Description - abstract, description of content
Creator - person(s) responsible for content
Publisher - persons(s) publishing work
Subject - topic, keywords, classification schemes
Language - language of content
Date - date made available
Relation - relationship of objects to other objects and collections
Rights - where copyright notice is found
